RAWALPINDI: Rawalpindi police Wednesday took Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Vice Chairman Shah Mahmood Qureshi into custody from Adiala jail a day after he was detained under the maintenance of public order (3-MPO) following his bail in cipher case.
Speaking to the media when the police was trying to bundle him up in the van, Qureshi said he was being arrested in a bogus case. “I am innocent and being victimized, politically,” he said.
It is believed that Qureshi has been formally arrested in cases related to attack on the GHQ on May 9. The riots broke out following the arrest of PTI founder Imran Khan from the premises of Islamabad High Court (IHC) in a corruption case earlier this year.
The PTI stalwart was shifted to RA Bazar police station in Rawalpindi in an armored vehicle.
It is to mention here that Deputy Commissioner Rawalpindi Hasan Waqar Cheema had issued Qureshi’s detention order a day earlier over his alleged involvement in the May 9 violent protests. The detention order was issued shortly before the issuance of his release orders by the Special Court Judge Abual Hasnat Zulqarnain in the cipher case as the Supreme Court approved his bail in the cipher case last week.
In a statement, Rawalpindi police said they were asked to interrogate Qureshi in connection with May 9 cases.
