JOHANNESBURG: The African Union (AU) has issued a resounding condemnation of what it terms an “attempted coup” in Gabon, calling on the military to ensure the safety of President Ali Bongo, his family, and members of the government.
In the wake of the declaration of President Ali Bongo’s victory in the recent election for a third term, military officers have seized power, casting the nation into a state of turmoil.
The military has invalidated the election results that confirmed Bongo as the winner with a majority of 64.27% of the total vote. Ali Bongo has held the presidency for over a decade, and the recent election’s outcome was met with mixed reactions and allegations of irregularities.

In a televised statement released by the Committee for the Transition and Restoration of Institutions (CTRI), the army expressed their concerns over what they characterized as “irresponsible, unpredictable governance” contributing to the erosion of social unity, raising the risk of plunging the country into chaos.
The statement confirmed that President Ali Bongo has been placed under house arrest, with his family and medical professionals by his side. This move aims to ensure his security while the nation grapples with the unfolding events.
Moussa Faki Mahamat, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, has voiced his profound concern over the situation in Gabon and is closely monitoring the developments.
The African Union’s condemnation and appeal for the protection of President Bongo’s family and government officials underpin the mounting regional and international apprehension surrounding the situation.
