NAIROBI: The head of the African Union Commission on Saturday expressed “great pain” over the devastating earthquake in Morocco that left more than 800 dead and injured hundreds others.
According to media reports, a 6.8 magnitude quake struck 72 kilometres (45 miles) southwest of tourist hotspot Marrakesh, killing at least 820 people and injuring hundreds of others.
Moussa Faki Mahamat expressed deep sorrow upon learning of the devastating impact of the earthquake in the Kingdom of Morocco. He conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the King, the Moroccan populace, and the bereaved families of the victims.
Comoros President and current Chairperson of the African Union, Azali Assoumani, extended his “solidarity” and offered his sympathies for the loss of precious lives in the quake that hit the central region of Morocco.
According to the Moroccan Centre for Scientific and Technical Research (CNRST), the earthquake’s epicentre was situated in the Al-Haouz province.
