Afghanistan’s Taliban Authorities Arrest Journalist in Kandahar

KABUL: Taliban authorities have apprehended Mohammad Yar Majrooh, a local journalist in Kandahar, according to the Afghanistan Journalists Center.

The Afghanistan Journalists Center in a statement said that Majrooh was detained on July 13. The circumstances and reasons for his arrest are not clear.

The statement added that a source within the local Taliban administration confirmed the arrest of Majrooh. According to the source, Majrooh was summoned and detained by the court in Kandahar.

Majrooh had worked as a reporter for Tolo News and was arrested by Taliban intelligence in February 2023.

During their nearly three years of rule, Taliban has detained dozens of journalists. Several human rights organizations have reported cases of journalists being tortured by the Taliban.
