VIENNA: A diverse assembly of Afghan political figures and activists has gathered in Vienna for the third round of discussions on shaping the future of Afghanistan. Led by Ahmad Massoud, the leader of the resistance front, the meeting is hosted by the Austrian Institute for International Affairs and aims to unite movements and individuals opposed to the Taliban.
The resistance front, in a statement, outlined the agenda for the meeting, placing a significant focus on exchanging perspectives on security matters, human rights, and women’s issues. Participants aspire to build consensus among Afghanistan’s political groups and parties, engage in discussions and consultations with regional and international stakeholders, and formulate a comprehensive roadmap for the nation’s political trajectory.
Efforts for Democratic Future for Afghanistan
Maisam Nazari, spokesperson for the resistance front, highlighted the broad participation of political parties, personalities, and civil society organizations, with a deliberate emphasis on ethnic and religious diversity. The primary objective is to facilitate substantive discussions, fortify a unified opposition, and outline a practical course toward a democratic future for Afghanistan.
Emphasizing the importance of the Vienna process as a central hub for political opposition groups, Nazari urged support from advocates of a democratic, just, and inclusive system for Afghanistan. The three-day summit is anticipated to be a pivotal moment, with results slated to be announced on the final day.
This Vienna meeting is taking place against the backdrop of two prior summits in Moscow and Dushanbe within the past month.
