KABUL: In the aftermath of a devastating earthquake that struck the Zindajan district of Herat, rescue operations are in full swing to extricate individuals trapped amidst the wreckage. The earthquake, which claimed numerous lives, has led to the solemn task of mass burials.

The calamity spurred a surge of support, as thousands of compassionate individuals from neighbouring districts rallied to aid in rescue operations and assist survivors in any way possible.

Amidst the ongoing response, ambulances have been tirelessly shuttling dozens of deceased individuals back to their respective villages, adding to the heart-wrenching toll.

Zarin, a relative of the victims, shared a glimpse of the tragic toll: Ten people have died here. Both were my nephews.

Ghulam Rasul, another grieving relative, recounted the devastation: I have buried eight members of my family with my own hands. Three others are in the hospital.

The relentless rescue operation, now in its fourth day, continues to grapple with the enormity of the disaster. Ali Ahmad, also a relative of the victims, expressed the urgency: It is still continuing—there are many people still under the wreckage and who have not been dragged out.

Abdul Rahman, a resident of Ghor who volunteered to aid the earthquake-affected community, painted a grim picture of the affected area: This area has been destroyed into dust and nothing is left behind. Only one or two people might have remained alive.

The initial earthquake, which struck on Saturday, targeted around 15 villages in the Zindajan district of Herat, leaving devastation in its wake. Aftershocks only compounded the already dire situation, further challenging the ongoing rescue efforts. As the community grapples with the immense loss and destruction, rescue teams tirelessly strive to rescue those still trapped and provide aid to the survivors.
