Afghanistan: Herat Government to Construct Small Dams to Address Water Crisis

HERAT CITY: The government in Herat, Afghanistan is making plans to construct small dams after the farmers’ expressed concerns regarding deep wells and the scarcity of irrigation water in Herat City.

According to Afghan media, farmers in Herat have raised deep concerns over the shortage of water resources in the coming years due to the indiscriminate use of water in the province.

Expert Eng. Shah Mahmood Haidar said that the underground water resources will continue to decrease until the government does not formulate a firm policy to limit the use of underground water in the province. He said solar energy is free of cost, but water is essential for survival and it should be used properly.

He urged the people and farmers in the area to avoid excessive use of water and solar energy in the best interest of society.  A local farmer Gul Ahmad said that water resources to irrigate land were not available, saying that they had no option but to dig deep wells. He said that they could not irrigate their land if they did not dig wells deep.

Nizar Ahmad Elyas, the governor’s spokesman said the provincial government has made plans to construct small dams in Herat City and adjacent districts. He added that the construction of the dams would help improve the water resources and provide water for agricultural land.
