ISLAMABAD: According to police in Afghanistan’s capital Kabul, gunmen killed a former MP, member of parliament, and one of her bodyguards at her home in a night-time attack.

Mursal Nabizada had been a parliamentary member of the government that had been backed by the United States, which was overthrown by the Taliban in August 2021.

According to AFP reports, a Kabul police officer disclosed that Nabizada and one of her bodyguards had been killed in the attack while the former lawmaker’s brother had been hurt.

The official added that a “serious probe” had been launched into the incident, which had taken place in the early hours of Sunday.

Deceased woman MP Mursal Nabizada termed trailblazer

Fellow former lawmaker Mariam Solaimankhil said that Mursal Nabizada was a “fearless champion” of Afghanistan. An outspoken and strong woman, truly a trailblazer, who even when facing danger stood true to what she believed in.

Solaimankhil added that Nabizada had been given a chance to leave Afghanistan, however, she stayed on to fight for her nation.

In 2018, Mursal Nabizada had been elected as a lawmaker from Kabul while she belonged to the province of Nangarhar in the east.

Since their takeover, the Taliban regime has quickly removed women from nearly all areas of public life. These include public sector work, secondary and higher education along with public baths and parks. Women have also been ordered to appear in public only while wearing a body-covering burqa.
