KABUL: The Taliban government in Afghanistan has condemned the statement by a UN official as “disrespectful” to Islam.
In a tweet on the social networking site Twitter, the spokesperson of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, Zabihullah Mujahid, said that the UN official’s remarks on implementing the Islamic penal code was “disrespect to the Holy Religion of Islam and against the international standards.”
The spokesperson of the UN High Commission for Human Rights and representatives of Western Countries had termed the punishment of flogging an “inhumane and cruel act.”
Zabihullah Mujahid asked organizations and countries not to allow individuals to give provocative and irresponsible statements on behalf of organizations or governments regarding the Islamic religion.
Earlier, the United Nations Rights Office Spokesperson Ravina Shamdasani had given a statement and condemned the Afghan Taliban for awarding corporal punishment.
The spokesperson said that the UN body was appalled by the mass floggings in public. She called for ending corporal punishment in Afghanistan.
