DUESSELDORF, Germany: Central and southern Germany experienced widespread flight cancellations and disrupted train services on Wednesday due to freezing rain.
The weather service issued warnings about slippery roads and heavy snowfall, prompting significant impacts on transportation. Frankfurt airport saw 570 out of 1,047 scheduled arrivals and departures canceled, while Munich airport had 254 flight cancellations.
Additionally, operations at a smaller airport in Saarbruecken came to a complete halt. The weather service continued to caution about an increased risk of black ice and heavy snowfall in the affected regions until Thursday.
German rail operator Deutsche Bahn anticipated delays and cancellations, implementing a precautionary measure by limiting the top speed of its high-speed ICE trains to 200 kilometers per hour.
