DUBAI: The Asian Cricket Council (ACC) on Wednesday deleted a social media post announcing the Pakistan vs United Arab Emirates clash in the Asia Cup, further intensifying the controversy already surrounding the tournament.
Earlier, the ACC had posted that Pakistan and UAE would play a decisive fixture, with the winner qualifying for the next stage. However, the announcement was taken down shortly afterwards without explanation, fuelling speculation about ongoing tensions.
The development came amid an escalating dispute between the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the International Cricket Council (ICC) over match referee Andy Pycroft.
According to PCB sources, cited by various media outlets, the board has written a second letter to the ICC after its initial demand for Pycroft’s removal was rejected.
In its latest communication, the PCB reiterated that Pakistan would not play any match officiated by Pycroft. It also reaffirmed its earlier warning of a potential boycott if its concerns were ignored.
Sources, cited by media, said the PCB rejected the ICC’s inquiry into the matter, describing it as “a mere formality” that failed to review all relevant aspects or engage stakeholders.
The board insisted that all reservations must be addressed before Pakistan agrees to participate further in the tournament.
“Pakistan will only play after an official announcement confirming that its concerns have been resolved and the demand accepted,” a source familiar with the correspondence said, as quoted by media.
Insiders added that the PCB’s firm stance has left the ICC with “no option” but to remove Pycroft from overseeing Pakistan’s matches. An official announcement on the referee’s replacement is expected soon.
