DUBAI: India flexed their batting muscle once again in the Asia Cup 2025, posting an imposing 202 runs against Sri Lanka after being put in to bat in the final Super Four clash at the Dubai International Stadium on Friday.
Sri Lanka’s decision to field first after winning the toss backfired almost immediately, as India’s top order came out with aggressive intent.
Abhishek Sharma leads the charge
The highlight of the Indian innings was yet another explosive knock from young star Abhishek Sharma, who hammered 61 off just 31 balls, laced with 8 fours and 2 sixes, at a scorching strike rate of 196.77. He continued his dream run in the tournament, attacking from the outset and ensuring India dominated the Powerplay.
Middle order power
After losing Shubman Gill early for 4, captain Suryakumar Yadav looked to settle but fell for 12 to Wanindu Hasaranga. The momentum, however, was maintained thanks to Tilak Varma’s classy unbeaten 49 off 34 balls and a quickfire 39 from Sanju Samson, who struck three sixes in his 23-ball stay.
Axar Patel chipped in with a handy 21 not out off 15, helping India push past the 200 mark, despite a brief stutter in the death overs.
Sri Lankan bowlers struggle to contain
Sri Lanka’s bowlers couldn’t find enough consistency on a flat Dubai pitch. Theekshana, Chameera, Hasaranga, Shanaka, and Asalanka all picked up a wicket each, but none were able to stem the flow of runs. Nuwan Thushara remained wicketless and was the most expensive, conceding 43 runs in his four overs.
All eyes on the chase
With 202 on the board, India have set Sri Lanka a daunting target. On a surface that’s gradually slowing down, Sri Lanka will need a near-perfect chase to salvage pride in this dead rubber as India heads to the Asia Cup 2025 final on Sunday against Pakistan.
