ISLAMABAD: A Pennsylvania woman has been convicted of multiple counts over the Capitol attack, according to the United States Department of Justice.
Riley June Williams was found guilty of six of the eight counts she was charged with, which include disorderly conduct in the Capitol and assaulting or resisting an officer.
Meanwhile, the jury could not reach a verdict on two other charges, including obstructing the certification of the electoral college and aiding and abetting in the theft of government property.
It was the first time that a January 6 Capitol defendant was not convicted on each of the counts they were charged with.
US District Judge Amy Berman Jackson ordered the detention of Williams after the jury delivered its verdict.
Williams 23, of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, will be sentenced on February 22 next year and, according to prosecutors, could face two to three years jail term, as per the sentencing guidelines.
She is among the estimated 900 defendants detained in connection to the Capitol riots, which took place as Congress was certifying US President Joe Biden as the victor of the 2020 presidential polls.
The Capitol Riots
On January 6, 2021, following then-US President Donald Trump’s defeat in the 2020 presidential poll, a mob of his supporters attacked the United States Capitol Building in Washington, D.C.
The protestors sought to keep Trump in power by preventing a joint session of Congress from counting the electoral college votes to formalize the victory of Biden.
According to the House select committee probing the incident, the attack was the culmination of a seven-part plan by Trump to overturn the election.
The incident resulted in five people losing their lives who died either shortly before, during, or following the event.
