DHAKA: Local officials have said that as many as 48 have died due to heavy monsoon rains and floods in South-eastern Bangladesh, local media reported on Saturday.
Officials said that the floodwaters are finally disappearing, providing a ray of hope to the flood-affected people in the region. Since Monday, more than 1.2 million people in Cox’s Bazar, Chattogram, Bandarban, and Rangamati – have been severely impacted by the floods and heavy rains. These floods have left thousands stranded and countless homes in ruins, local media stated. As per media reports two Rohingya refugees were also killed due to the floods.
Floods Kill 48 in Bangladesh
In a concerted effort to provide aid and support, authorities are taking part in the rescue operations. Chattogram district’s senior official, Rakib Hasan, said that while the floodwaters are gradually receding, certain areas are still flooded. He stressed the ongoing critical need for clean drinking water for the affected population.
Authorities said that Bangladesh’s largest man-made lake, Kaptai Lake in Rangamati district is also a factor for the current flood in the region, causing water levels to surge.
With meteorologists predicting monsoon rains to persist until August 15, the challenge for the relief and rescue efforts.
