LAS VEGAS: The White House has announced a competition offering millions of dollars in prize money to hackers using artificial intelligence (AI) systems to counter cyber security risks, Western media reported on Wednesday.

White House Workplace of Science and Expertise Coverage Director, Arati Prabhakar announcing the competition said that hackers will have the chance to win nearly $20 in prizes for creating new systems to protect critical US infrastructure.

She believed the competition would bring hundreds of hackers using their technological skills to create a new AI system.

Competitors will be designing different AI systems that promptly find and fix software issues in electric grids, subways or other key networks that could be exploited by hackers.

Arati Prabhakar during a briefing said this competition is open for all kinds of creative people to improve the security of critical software on which American families and businesses relies on.

She said the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) running the competition is cooperating with AI tech titans Anthropic, Google, Microsoft, and ChatGPT-maker OpenAI, to provide expertise and technology for the competition.

Deputy National Security Advisor for Cyber and Emerging Technology Anne Neuberger in the briefing said the challenge is aimed to bring diverse thinkers from across the US to think about how AI can be used to improve cybersecurity.

US President Joe Biden during a meeting with tech leaders at the White House last month said he was committed to guarding against everything from cyber-attacks.
