North Korea Condemns US Arms Package to Taiwan as ‘Dangerous’ Provocation

SEOUL: North Korea has denounced a US arms package to Taiwan, state media reported on Friday, alleging Washington of driving tensions in the region to “another eruption point of war.”

Earlier, Washington revealed a package for Taiwan worth up to $345 million as the US Congress approved to $1 billion worth of arms for the island as a part of the 2023 fiscal budget.

KCNA news agency quoted, head of  North Korean foreign ministry’s Chinese affairs department as saying that plan of the US is a “dangerous military and political provocation” and a “blatant violation” of the One China principle.

KNCA added “It is the evil intention of Washington to turn the island into an advanced base against Beijing and the first-line trough for carrying out its plan for containing China,”.

China claims the island as its own territory, and has several times warned against any “official exchanges” between the US and Taiwan. According to KNCA, “The Asia-Pacific region, including the Taiwan Strait and Korean peninsula, is neither a theatre of the US army activity nor a test site of war,” warning that Washington will have to “pay a high price” for “infuriating the key interest of Beijing.”

North Korea’s leader Kim Jong Un met a Chinese delegation in Pyongyang earlier and promised to develop the two sides’ ties to a “new high.”

China’s army has been flexing its muscles around Taiwan, recently sending several bombers, fighters,  and other aircraft, into the skies to of island, Taiwan’s Defence ministry said.
