WASHINGTON: US Secretary of State Antony Blinken criticized his Russian counterpart, Sergei Lavrov, for offering a negative perspective and unproductive engagement during Southeast Asian talks held in Jakarta.

After the discussions, Blinken expressed his dissatisfaction with Lavrov’s approach, stating that the Russian diplomat presented a “totally negative presentation and agenda” and ascribed every global problem to the United States.

According to Blinken, Lavrov’s involvement in the talks was neither constructive nor productive. The Russian foreign minister’s comments were seen as an attempt to shift blame onto the United States for various challenges worldwide. Blinken expressed disappointment with Moscow’s approach, emphasizing the need for more constructive engagement between the two countries.

During the same talks, Blinken also urged Russia to extend a grain deal set to expire the following week. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan had previously indicated that Russian President Vladimir Putin had agreed to an extension. Blinken’s request reflects the United States’ desire to maintain diplomatic and economic ties with Russia.

Southeast Asian Talks in Jakarta

Both Blinken and Lavrov were present in Jakarta to engage with leaders from Southeast Asian nations. In addition to participating in the regional discussions, they held direct talks with China’s top diplomat, Wang Yi.

Blinken’s remarks came after European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell disclosed that Lavrov responded aggressively to criticism of Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine. According to Borrell, Lavrov dismissed concerns as a “West conspiracy” and affirmed Russia’s intention to continue the conflict.

The ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine has deepened the divide between Russia and the West, resembling a Cold War-style rupture. The United States and major European powers have provided financial and military support to Ukraine in response to Russia’s invasion.
