ISLAMABAD: The alarming rise in mental health disorders among children reflects society’s failure to provide adequate support to those in need, according to health experts.
Emphasizing the crucial role parents play in ensuring the mental well-being of their children, experts highlight the significance of family and couple therapy, as well as techniques like stress management, psychotherapy, and behavioral training in addressing these issues.
They stress the need for government and community efforts to provide easily accessible mental health resources and prioritize the physical and psychological well-being of children.
Bushra Iqbal, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Mehfooz Bachpan, stated that understanding children’s mental, physiological, and physical aspects, and creating a nurturing environment for their success and sense of belonging in society, is essential.
Tools to Address Mental Health Problems
Psychologist Sobia Khateeb explained that family and couple therapy, including family training therapies, psychotherapy, stress management, and behavioral management, are valuable tools in tackling children’s mental health problems.
She further emphasized the importance of active engagement with children, close observation of their activities, and addressing their thoughts and concerns. Creating an open, friendly, and supportive environment at home can help alleviate fears and anxieties contributing to mental health disorders.
Regular check-ins with children are also necessary to monitor their emotional well-being, as their emotions and moods can change abruptly. By actively communicating and providing support, parents can help normalize their fears and anxieties.
