PARIS: In response to violent clashes that erupted following the shooting of a teenager by police during a traffic stop, a suburb of Paris has declared a nightly curfew, effective immediately.
The mayor’s office of Clamart, a typically tranquil town located southwest of the capital, announced that residents are prohibited from being outdoors between 9:00 pm (1900 GMT) and 6:00 am, beginning Thursday and lasting until the following Monday.
Nationwide Protests in France
The protests, which have spread throughout France in response to the death of 17-year-old Nahel, who was fatally shot by police during a traffic stop, have led to the arrest of 150 individuals overnight.
During the protests in Clamart, a tram was set ablaze during the night of Wednesday to Thursday, further escalating tensions.
Earlier, the president of the Paris region revealed that bus and tram services in and around the capital would be suspended every evening starting at 9:00 pm, beginning Thursday. This measure is intended to ensure the safety of staff and passengers amidst anticipated protests.
