WASHINGTON: A group of Democratic lawmakers has urged President Joe Biden to raise human rights issues with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to Washington this week.
In a letter addressed to President Biden, the lawmakers emphasized the significance of upholding fundamental principles in American foreign policy.
Led by Senator Chris Van Hollen and Representative Pramila Jayapal, the letter stated, “We do not endorse any particular Indian leader or political party — that is the decision of the people of India — but we do stand in support of the important principles that should be a core part of American foreign policy.” The letter, signed by 75 Democratic members of Congress, including 18 senators and 57 representatives, was sent to the White House on Tuesday and was first reported by Reuters.
The lawmakers urged President Biden to engage in a comprehensive discussion with Prime Minister Modi, encompassing a wide range of issues that are vital to fostering a successful, strong, and long-term relationship between the two countries.

While Prime Minister Modi has previously visited the United States on five occasions since assuming office in 2014, this visit marks his first official state visit, underscoring the significance both nations place on their bilateral ties. However, concerns have been raised regarding the human rights situation in India under the leadership of Modi’s Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party.
The Biden administration seeks to deepen cooperation with India, recognizing it as a strategic partner in countering China’s influence. Nevertheless, human rights advocates express apprehension that geopolitical considerations may overshadow the need to address human rights concerns. Multiple rights groups in the United States plan to hold protests during Modi’s visit.
In March, the State Department’s annual report on human rights practices highlighted “significant human rights issues” and abuses in India. The upcoming meeting between President Biden and Prime Minister Modi presents an opportunity for the United States to address these concerns and emphasize the importance of upholding human rights principles.
