KARACHI: As Cyclone Biparjoy continued to move farther north-northwestward during the previous 12 hours, the Pakistan Metrological Department (PMD) reported on Tuesday that it was 470 kilometers south of Karachi and 460 kilometers away from Thatta. As a result, the sea level has started to increase along the city’s coastal area.

The PMD statement said, “favorable environmental conditions (upper-level divergence, sea surface temperature of 29-31°C, and low vertical wind shear) support it to sustain its strength through the forecast period.”

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) also noted on its official Twitter account that the cyclone has ‘weakened’ from its previous status of highly severe into a very severe cyclonic storm with a current speed of roughly 140-150 km/h. Latitude 20.7° N and Longitude 67.1° E are close by where it is located.

According to the NDMA’s website, tropical cyclone Biparjoy “as per the latest forecast, is expected to maintain a northward trajectory til tomorrow (14) morning, and then it is expected to recurve eastward and will land between Keti Bandar (Southeast Sindh Coastline) and the Indian Gujarat Coastline in the afternoon of June 15, 2023, as a Very Severe Cyclonic Storm (VSCS).”

The areas likely to be affected include Sajawal, Tharparkar, Thatta, Badin, Karachi, Hyderabad, Ormara, Mirpurkhas, Umerkot, Tando Mohammad Khan, and Tando Allah Yar Khan.

According to the most recent advisory from the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), Biparjoy, has been moving more north-northwestward over the past 12 hours.

Currently, it is located about 470 kilometers south of Karachi and 460 kilometers south of Thatta, close to latitude 20.7°N and longitude 67.1°E.

According to the PMD, extraordinary sea conditions have maximum wave heights of 30 feet near the system center, maximum sustained surface winds of 140–150 km/h, and gusts of 170 km/h.

An emergency meeting of the Karachi Corps Commander

Last night, the emergency meeting was convened by Lieutenant General Babar Iftikhar, commander of the Karachi Corps, to discuss the preparations taken in Badin for Biparjoy. Military representatives and leaders of civil organizations, including the director general of the Sindh Rangers and the GOC for Hyderabad, attended the meeting.

The individuals in question told the corps commander about the preparations, who was pleased with the prompt arrangements. The corps commander instructed the officials that “all resources will be used to deal with potential threats,” adding that Pakistan Army personnel had arrived in several locations in case rescue actions were required.

He declared that “the people will never be left alone.”
