ANKARA: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has expressed optimism that Pakistan will finalize a deal with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) this month. In an exclusive interview with Anadolu Agency in Ankara, Sharif stated that the ninth review by the IMF is expected to meet all terms and conditions, potentially bringing positive news in the coming weeks.
Negotiations between Islamabad and the IMF have been ongoing since early February to secure the release of $1.1 billion, part of a $6.5 billion bailout package agreed upon in 2019 under the previous government of former Prime Minister Imran Khan. Approximately $2.7 billion from the package remains to be disbursed, and the agreement is set to expire this month.
While requesting assistance from IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva at the end of May to revive the stalled facility, Sharif assured that Pakistan has fulfilled all the conditionalities set by the IMF. He emphasized that the required actions were completed before the board’s approval, showcasing the government’s commitment to meeting the agreed-upon terms.
Resilience and Determination of Pakistan
When discussing contingency plans in the event of unsuccessful talks with the IMF, Sharif highlighted the resilience and determination of the Pakistani nation. He reassured that if needed, the people of Pakistan would tighten their belts and overcome challenges, as they have done in the past.
Sharif attributed the current problems faced by Pakistan to the policies of the previous government, the devastating floods in August 2022, and inflation. He commended his government’s efforts in navigating these challenges with the support of the Pakistani people and friendly nations.
The recent arrest of former Prime Minister Imran Khan in a corruption case has further intensified unrest in Pakistan, resulting in violent protests and attacks on state and military installations. Sharif explained that Khan faced serious corruption charges, and the law had to intervene. He accused Khan of inciting violence and planning acts against the state, adding that those involved in attacks on civilian and military installations would face trial in accordance with the relevant laws.
Sharif highlighted the importance of ensuring justice and preventing such acts from recurring in Pakistan’s future. He drew a parallel to the events at Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., on January 6, 2021, emphasizing that countries take severe actions against perpetrators to deter such incidents.
Increased Cooperation Between Pakistan and Türkiye
In terms of bilateral relations, Sharif congratulated Türkiye on President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s reelection, expressing his desire for enhanced cooperation and economic ties. He emphasized the close bond between the two brotherly countries and their shared understanding, anticipating opportunities for growth and mutual prosperity.
Sharif revealed plans for increased cooperation with Türkiye in various sectors, including biogas, solar energy, and hydropower, aiming to strengthen trade and economic cooperation in the near future.
The positive outlook on the IMF deal and the commitment to addressing internal challenges and strengthening international relationships signal a proactive approach by Pakistan’s government under Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s leadership.
