TEHRAN: Iran executed three individuals on Sunday who had been found guilty of drug trafficking, the judiciary said.
According to AFP, this was the most recent hanging in Iran since the start of the year.
According to the judiciary’s Mizan Online news website, the three men—described as members of a “drug cartel”—were hung after being found guilty of “corruption on earth” for generating over 40 kilogrammes (88 pounds) of heroin.
The executions occur a day after a man was hung for running a prostitution and human trafficking network after being found guilty.
On Friday, three other individuals were put to death for the murder of security personnel during protests that started in November last year after the death of Mahsa Amini while being held in detention.
Following the murder on September 16 of Amini, a 22-year-old Iranian Kurd who had been detained for allegedly violating the Islamic republic’s stringent clothing codes for women, there were widespread protests across the country.
Numerous security officers as well as thousands of Iranians were killed during the protests, which Tehran referred to as “riots” started by foreigners.
Human rights organisations operating outside Iran and Western nations have condemned the killings that took place on Friday.
Human rights organisations like Amnesty International say that Iran kills more people each year than any other country outside China.
According to a study released in April by the organisations Together Against the Death Penalty (ECPM) and Iran Human Rights (IHR), both located in Paris and Norway, the Iranian regime executed 75% more individuals in 2022 than the previous year.
According to the two organisations, at least 582 individuals were put to death in Iran last year, which is a significant increase from the 333 reported in 2021 and the biggest number of executions since 2015.
Although IHR has already recorded at least 260 killings since the year’s beginning, the rate of executions this year has been considerably faster thus far.
