CAIRO: Arab League foreign ministers approved a decision to readmit Syria following more than a decade of suspension on Sunday, an official said.
According to a spokesperson for the league consolidating a regional push to normalize relations with President Bashar Al-Assad. The spokesperson for Arab League Secretary-General said that the decision was made at an Arab foreign ministers’ meeting at the league’s headquarters in Cairo.
Arab Nations Agree on Syria’s Return to League
Syria’s membership of the League was suspended in 2011 following a bloody crackdown on street protests against Assad’s regime that led to a civil war, and many Arab nations pulled their ambassadors out of Damascus.
Recently, several Arab nations, including the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Egypt, have re-engaged with Assad’s regime in high-level meetings and trips.
Arab nations have been trying to reach a consensus on whether to invite President Assad to an Arab League summit on May 19 in Saudi Arabia to discuss the pace of normalizing relations and on what terms Syria could be allowed back.
