NAIROBI: Sudan’s ex-prime minister Abdalla Hamdok on Saturday warned that the current conflict in the African country could deteriorate to one of the world’s worst civil wars if not stopped immediately.

Over 500 people have been killed since the fighting erupted on April 15 between the army and Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Sudan.

The two sides have agreed to multiple ceasefires but none has effectively taken hold as the number of dead people continues to increase and chaos and lawlessness grip the country’s capital.

According to AFP, the former PM said “if Sudan is to reach a point of war… Yemen, Syria, and Libya will be a small play. I think it would be a nightmare for the globe,” he said, saying that it would have many consequences.

The current fighting was a “senseless war” between two forces, he said. “There is no one who is going to come out of this winning. That is why the war has to stop.”

More than 75,000 people have been displaced by the current violence in Khartoum, Blue Nile and North Kordofan and Darfur, the UN said.

The current fighting has also triggered a mass departure of foreigners and international officials.  Hamdok was the PM of Sudan’s fragile transition to civilian rule before being ousted. He was then reinstated but he resigned in January. AFP
