UNITED NATIONS: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has urged Sudan’s rival factions to halt their hostilities and begin a dialogue to resolve the ongoing crisis in the country.

In a statement released on Monday, Guterres warned that any further escalation of the conflict between the Sudanese army and paramilitary forces could be devastating for Sudan and the wider region.

The violence, which began on Saturday, has claimed over 100 lives and follows a period of power struggles between army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and his deputy, Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, who leads the powerful paramilitary Rapid Support Forces.

UN spoke with Sudan leaders

The UN chief revealed that he had spoken with both leaders over the weekend and was engaging with the African Union, the Arab League, and other regional leaders.

Guterres also highlighted the catastrophic humanitarian situation in Sudan and urged those with influence over the situation to work towards peace and support efforts to end the violence and restore order.

The United Nations Security Council is due to discuss the situation in Sudan later on Monday.
