RIYADH: Saudi Arabia and Syria have said they would further enhance cooperation and expedite efforts to reach a political settlement to the Syrian crisis, a joint statement said on Wednesday. The joint statement was issued after a meeting between Saudi Arabian Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan and Syrian Minister for Foreign Affairs Faisal Mekdad held in Jeddah.
Political settlement to Syrian crisis
The statement said that the two sides discussed the joint efforts and cooperation to reach a political settlement to the crisis in Syria that preserves Syria’s security, unity, territorial integrity, and stability during the meeting. They also welcomed the start of the process for restoring consular services and flights in the two nations, the joint statement added.

The two top diplomats also agreed on the significance of resolving humanitarian issues and creating an appropriate atmosphere for assistance to reach all areas in Syria.
Saudi Arabia and Syria stressed the significance of strengthening security and battling terrorism in all its forms, and further enhancing cooperation to fight drug smuggling in the region.
The Syrian Foreign Minister expressed Syria’s appreciation for the Kingdom’s efforts to assist end the crisis in Syria and for providing humanitarian aid to those affected by the quakes.
Earlier, Saudi Arabia’s deputy foreign minister received the Syrian minister for foreign affairs Faisal Mekdad upon his arrival in Saudi Arabia.
