LONDON: A UK judge on Tuesday sentenced a former police officer to life in jail, with a minimum term of thirty years, for several rapes and sexual assaults in the latest incident to shame the Metropolitan Police force of London.
Judge Bobbie Cheema-Grubb, in her verdict, handed David Carrick 36 life sentences for a “monstrous” string of 71 sexual crimes against 12 women.
UK police officer committed 48 rapes
She said David Carrick, whose crimes included 48 rapes, represented a “grave danger to women” which would “last for long.”
Carrick, 48, a long-serving police officer with the Met, Britain’s largest police force, will serve three decades behind bars before being considered for parole.
The police force has vowed to end a culture of lax vetting and misogyny, highlighted by the rape and murder of a young woman who was snatched by a police officer off the street in March 2021.
