CHICAGO: Nabeela Syed, a 27-year-old American Muslim woman of Indian descent, has won a seat in the Illinois State Senate, defeating Republican incumbent Darby Hills in the November 3 midterm elections.

Syed, a Democrat, secured around 57 per cent of the vote against Hills’ 43 per cent, winning the 26th Senate District and wresting the seat from Republican control.

Her victory marks another milestone in a political journey that began in 2022, when she became the youngest woman elected to the Illinois General Assembly. She was also among the first Muslim lawmakers to serve in the state’s legislature.

Born and raised in Illinois, Syed graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, in 2021. Before contesting the Senate election, she served two terms as a member of the Illinois House of Representatives, representing the 51st District.

During her tenure in the state House, she said she had helped pass more than 25 bills, many with bipartisan support.

Her legislative priorities included lowering prescription drug costs, expanding healthcare coverage for cancer screenings, protecting consumers and strengthening safeguards for victims of sexual assault.

During her election campaign, Syed made concerns over the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence data centres a major issue.

She argued that technology companies should bear the costs of the enormous electricity consumption of their facilities rather than passing the burden on to ordinary consumers through higher utility bills.

She also focused on affordability, access to healthcare, taxation and protecting residents from the environmental impact of large data-centre projects.

Her victory comes amid wider Democratic gains in the November 3 elections, in which several Republican-held seats across the United States were also contested.

Syed’s election to the Illinois Senate represents a progression from the state House to the upper chamber of the Illinois General Assembly.
