SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, Spain: Spanish football is mourning the death of CD Tenerife striker Jesus de Miguel, who died on Tuesday morning after suffering critical injuries in a collision with FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono during a Spanish second-division match.

De Miguel, 30, played for CD Tenerife, a professional football club based in Santa Cruz de Tenerife in Spain’s Canary Islands. He suffered the fatal injuries late in Monday’s match at the Heliodoro Rodriguez Lopez Stadium, which was abandoned after the incident.

Fatal collision during match

The incident occurred when Equatorial Guinea international goalkeeper Owono rushed out of his goal to clear the ball and collided with De Miguel in the middle of the pitch. Owono was sent off following the challenge, while the score was level at 2-2.

Spanish media reported that De Miguel suffered a cardiac arrest and was resuscitated before being taken to hospital, where he was admitted to intensive care.

Tenerife later said his neurological condition had deteriorated before announcing his death at 8:00am (0700 GMT) on Tuesday.

In a statement, the club expressed profound grief over the loss of its player, saying: “No words can ease the pain, nothing can lessen this great feeling of sadness.”

The club also extended its condolences to De Miguel’s family, close friends and supporters.

Spanish police sources told AFP that an investigation into the incident had been opened under judicial supervision.
