The 38-year-old’s retirement with immediate effect was reported by international media on Monday. Australia’s final fixture against Oman in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup earlier this year marked his last international appearance.
Maxwell had already announced his retirement from One-Day International (ODI) cricket in June last year, while his last Test appearance came in 2017. Although he had not formally retired from Test cricket at the time, a return to the longest format was considered unlikely.

In a must-win group-stage encounter in Mumbai, Australia were struggling at 91 for seven while chasing Afghanistan’s target of 292 runs, with an upset defeat threatening their World Cup campaign.

The right-handed batter turned the contest on its head, smashing an unbeaten 201 off just 128 deliveries, including 21 boundaries and ten sixes, to guide Australia to a remarkable three-wicket victory.
