LISBON, Portugal: Portugal superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has been handed a 30-day suspension and fined €255 ($285.83) by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) after leaving the national team camp following a reported disagreement over his role in the squad.

The federation’s disciplinary council announced on Monday that it had upheld the charge against the 41-year-old forward in full, finding him guilty of intentionally committing an offence under Article 160(1) of its disciplinary regulations.

The proceedings were opened on October 9 over incidents reported two days earlier, although the federation did not specify which matches or team activities would be covered by the suspension.

Dispute over team role sparks camp departure

Ronaldo left Portugal’s training camp in Copenhagen ahead of their Nations League match against Denmark after a disagreement involving head coach Jorge Jesus and Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proença.

The forward said a press conference by Jesus, followed by a conversation with Proença, prompted his decision to leave the camp.

Ronaldo, who had remained on the bench against Norway, accused Jesus of breaking promises twice regarding his role in the team. Jesus denied reaching any agreement with the veteran striker but left the door open for his return after Portugal’s 2-1 victory.

The disciplinary council’s decision has raised questions about the immediate implications for Ronaldo’s international commitments, as the federation has yet to clarify whether time already served under a provisional suspension will count towards the 30-day penalty.

Following his departure, Ronaldo issued a lengthy statement of more than 1,700 words to Portuguese media, which was subsequently shared on his social media accounts.

In the statement, he apologised for failing to acknowledge supporters after the Norway match and for leaving his teammates.

Meanwhile, FPF president Pedro Proença has said that everyone within the federation supported Ronaldo’s return to the national team once the matter had been resolved.
