BISHKEK: Pakistan and Kyrgyzstan have agreed to take practical steps to expand bilateral trade from $16 million to $200 million within two years, as the two countries moved to deepen their economic partnership and cooperation across a range of strategic sectors.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, addressing a joint press conference with Kyrgyz President Sadyr Zhaparov in Bishkek on Wednesday, said the two sides would implement a comprehensive plan to improve trade procedures, promote joint investment, strengthen industrial cooperation and expand direct business-to-business links.

“The current volume of bilateral trade between Pakistan and Kyrgyzstan is only $16 million, which in no way corresponds to our friendship, brotherhood and strong relations,” the prime minister said.

He said taking trade to $200 million within two years was an achievable target.
The two leaders also witnessed the exchange of agreements and memorandums of understanding covering trade, transit, energy, security, education, health, climate change, science and technology, culture and other areas.
The agreements cover trade, transit, security, education, health, climate change, technology and legal cooperation, reflecting a wider push to deepen relations between the two countries.
The two leaders also signed a joint statement outlining the outcomes and objectives of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s three-day visit to Kyrgyzstan, where he is attending the meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation.
Trade At The Centre
Pakistan and Kyrgyzstan signed agreements on transit trade aimed at facilitating the movement of goods and strengthening commercial links between the two countries.
The two sides also signed an agreement to promote cooperation in science and technology.
An agreement between the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Kyrgyz Republic and the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry was signed to strengthen business-to-business cooperation and expand bilateral commercial ties.
The two countries also agreed to establish a sister-city relationship between Lahore and Osh.
Diplomatic And Security Cooperation
The foreign ministries signed a diplomatic Programme of Cooperation for 2026–2027.
An MoU between the Institute of Strategic Studies Islamabad and the National Institute for Strategic Initiatives of the Kyrgyz Republic will strengthen cooperation in strategic research.
The two countries also signed a treaty on extradition and formulated a draft agreement on mutual legal assistance in criminal matters.
Their interior ministries signed an MoU to combat the illicit trafficking of narcotic drugs, psychotropic substances and precursor chemicals.
Education, Health And Climate
Cooperation was also expanded in education and healthcare.
The Kyrgyz health ministry and Pakistan Medical and Dental Council signed an MoU on medical education, while the two education ministries signed another agreement to promote cooperation in the education sector.
An MoU between the Kyrgyz Ministry of Natural Resources, Ecology and Technical Supervision and Pakistan’s Ministry of Climate Change and Environmental Coordination will strengthen cooperation on environmental protection and climate change.
The National Defence University Pakistan and the National Institute for Strategic Initiatives of the Kyrgyz Republic also signed an MoU covering academic research and joint activities.
Technology And E-Commerce
The two countries also moved to expand cooperation in emerging technologies.
The National Agency for Virtual Assets and Blockchain Technologies under the Kyrgyz President and Pakistan’s Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority signed an MoU on cooperation in virtual assets.
Kyrgyz Post and Pakistan Post signed an agreement on postal services and e-commerce, opening another avenue for commercial connectivity between the two countries.
The agreements come as Islamabad and Bishkek seek to translate their growing political ties into stronger trade, investment and institutional cooperation, with the $200 million trade target providing a key economic objective for the partnership.
