ISLAMABAD: Syrian Foreign Minister and Expatriates Asaad Hassan al-Shaibani will arrive in Pakistan today (Wednesday) for a two-day official visit aimed at strengthening bilateral ties and expanding cooperation between Islamabad and Damascus.

The visit, taking place on August 19–20 at the invitation of Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar, comes as the two countries seek to deepen engagement across a broad range of areas, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

The Syrian foreign minister will be accompanied by a high-level delegation and will hold in-depth talks with Pakistani leadership on the entire spectrum of bilateral relations.

The two sides are expected to review avenues for enhancing cooperation and exchange views on key regional and international developments.

The Foreign Office described the visit as an important step towards further strengthening Pakistan-Syria relations and advancing mutually beneficial cooperation between the two countries.

Earlier, Pakistan strongly condemned the unprovoked attack carried out by Israeli occupation forces on Abu al-Duhur Airbase in Idlib, Syria.

Foreign Ministry, in a statement, said such provocative actions constitute a flagrant violation of international law and have the potential to further undermine regional peace and stability.

The ministry expressed Pakistan’s unwavering solidarity with the brotherly people of Syria, and reiterated its full support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity as well as peace and prosperity of Syria.

“Pakistan also calls on the international community to play its role in ending repeated violations of international law by the Israeli occupation forces, and to hold it accountable for its destabilising actions in the region,” said the statement.

Pakistan and Syria established diplomatic relations in 1948, while political and defence ties grew substantially during the 1960s and 1970s. Pakistan provided military training and assistance to Syria, including the deployment of Pakistani Air Force pilots who flew Syrian fighter aircraft.

Political relations were also strong. Syrian President Hafez al-Assad visited Lahore in 1974 to attend the Islamic Summit, while Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Muallem visited Islamabad in 2007 for the 34th session of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation’s Council of Foreign Ministers.

The relationship also extended beyond defence and politics. Pakistan and Syria strengthened their cooperation in the field of education through exchanges between educational institutions and government officials.

Pakistan’s Foreign Office records continued engagement in this sector, including a visit by Syria’s education minister to Pakistan in 2021.

The last Syrian foreign minister to visit Pakistan was Walid al-Mouallem, who traveled to Islamabad in May 2007.

A Pakistani delegation met Al-Shaibani in Damascus in June last year.

In March, the Pakistani prime minister discussed the ongoing escalation in the Middle East with Syrian President Sharaa during a telephone call.
