TAROUBA, Trinidad: Records are made to be broken, but some are simply never meant to be touched. Stuart Broad’s 2016 feat of four successive wicket maidens stood as the gold standard of bowling consistency, until Justin Greaves went one better.
West Indies all-rounder produced a spell for the ages on Tuesday, becoming the first bowler in Test history to claim wickets in five straight maiden overs, decimating Pakistan with figures of 5-27 and flipping the World Test Championship contest on its head.

Greaves’ historic achievement surpassed the previous record of four successive wicket maidens, set by former England fast bowler Stuart Broad against South Africa at Johannesburg in 2016.
Playing in his 17th Test match, the all-rounder claimed his maiden five-wicket haul as Pakistan, who had been cruising at 244-3, suffered a spectacular collapse to be bowled out for 282 in reply to West Indies’ first-innings total of 311.
The significance of Greaves’ feat cannot be overstated, no bowler in the recorded history of Test cricket had ever managed to take wickets in five straight maiden overs, making the Barbadian’s achievement a truly unprecedented milestone in the game’s 148-year history.

A collapse for the ages
Pakistan’s innings had been anchored by former captain Shan Masood, who compiled a resolute 109 to steer his side into a commanding position. The visitors appeared poised to take a substantial first-innings lead when Greaves was introduced into the attack by captain Roston Chase.
“When I came on, captain Roston Chase just said ‘continue to be disciplined in what you are doing’ and to see if I can get some wickets for the team,” Greaves revealed after the day’s play. “The ball nipped around and I got some reward. Anytime I get the ball in hand the team looks to me to be that solid player for them, try to dig us out of situations.”
What followed was a masterclass in controlled seam bowling. Greaves dismissed the well-set Masood for 109 to break the threatening partnership, then struck in consecutive maiden overs to remove Aamer Jamal, Ali Usman, and Mohammad Rizwan without conceding a single run.

Pakistan, who had been 244-3, suddenly found themselves reeling at 267-8 at the lunch interval. The seamer completed his historic feat after the break when he had Mohammad Abbas caught behind, securing his fifth wicket from five successive maiden overs and leaving Pakistan all out for 282, trailing by 29 runs.
“I’m really happy to get five wickets for the first time in Test cricket, but there’s still a lot of work to do in the game,” Greaves said, maintaining focus on the larger contest.
Pakistan’s hopes crumbled on Day 4 at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy as West Indies stormed to a commanding 90-run victory in the opening Test. Chasing a modest 211 for victory, the visitors were blown away for just 120, with Jayden Seales producing a devastating five-wicket haul.
Captain Babar Azam fought a lone battle with an unbeaten half-century, while No.11 Mohammad Abbas offered stubborn resistance, but Pakistan’s batting order wilted under relentless pace bowling, sealing their fate shortly after the tea interval.

WTC standings shake-up
The result has significant implications for the World Test Championship 2025-27 standings. West Indies, currently in eighth place, improved their points percentage to 22.73 and now sit dangerously close to England in seventh position (24.36). A victory in the second Test would see the Caribbean side leapfrog England on the table.
Pakistan, meanwhile, continue to languish at the bottom of the standings. The defeat saw their points percentage plummet further to 6.67, with the team having now lost four of their five Tests in the current cycle, compounded by eight points of deductions that have severely undermined their campaign.
