GENEVA: The Pakistan-mediated US-Iran agreement aimed at ending the Middle East conflict will be signed on Friday at Switzerland’s Burgenstock mountain resort, the Swiss foreign ministry said.

The agreement follows months of Pakistan-led diplomatic efforts to de-escalate tensions that erupted on February 28 with US-Israeli strikes on Iran and subsequently spread across the region.

“The signing is scheduled for Friday, June 19, at Burgenstock,” the Swiss foreign ministry said in a statement.

The Swiss foreign ministry added that the location was proposed by Pakistani and Qatari mediators, as well as by the United States and Iran.

Pakistan will host the historic signing ceremony of a memorandum of understanding between the US and Iran to end the Middle East conflict and restore peace.

“Switzerland is acting as a facilitator in this process, creating the practical and diplomatic conditions necessary for this meeting to take place on Swiss territory,” the Swiss foreign ministry said.

Pakistan has played a key mediating role in facilitating the agreement between Washington and Tehran.

On Monday, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced that the agreement between the United States and Iran would be signed on 19 June in Switzerland.

He said that after more than three months of sustained diplomatic efforts, the two sides had agreed to an “immediate and permanent cessation of hostilities” across all fronts, including in Lebanon.

Later, while addressing the National Assembly, Prime Minister Sharif said the ceremony would mark a “historic milestone” for global peace and diplomacy.

“This is not merely an agreement between two countries, but a victory for dialogue, restraint and diplomacy,” PM Sharif said, congratulating the international community on the development.

World leaders and international organisations have welcomed the agreement, describing it as a significant diplomatic breakthrough and praising Pakistan’s role in facilitating negotiations.

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Majid Takht-Ravanchi said Iran’s Parliament Speaker and chief negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf would attend the signing ceremony.

He said Ghalibaf would represent Tehran at the formalisation of the agreement.

US President Donald Trump said on Monday that Vice President JD Vance would represent the United States at the ceremony in Switzerland.
