ISLAMABAD: Former United Nations weapons inspector Scott Ritter has praised Pakistan’s leadership for its mediation role in helping bring an end to the conflict between Iran and the United States, saying it deserves the Nobel Peace Prize for its relentless efforts to secure peace.

Speaking in an interview, Ritter commended Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts during the conflict and said the country’s leadership had played an “essential role” in achieving a peaceful outcome.

“If there ever was somebody who deserved the Nobel Peace Prize, the Pakistani leadership that has played this very essential role deserves this. You’ve earned it,” he said.

Ritter also urged the international community to recognise Pakistan’s contribution to regional and global stability. He said the world should work more closely with Pakistan and help strengthen its economy after its significant role in securing peace.

“It’s time for the world to recognise the role that Pakistan played and to work with Pakistan. We have to stop exploiting Pakistan and start working with Pakistan and help shore up Pakistan’s economy,” he said.

His remarks came after Pakistan announced that a peace agreement had been reached between the United States and Iran following intensive diplomatic efforts involving several regional countries.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said the agreement included the immediate and permanent cessation of military operations and would be formally signed on Friday in Switzerland.

PM Sharif on Monday announced that Pakistan will host the signing ceremony of a landmark peace agreement between the United States and Iran in Geneva on June 19.

Earlier in the day, the prime minister stated that a peace agreement between the United States and Iran had been reached and would be formally signed on 19 June in Switzerland.

“This is not merely an agreement between two countries, but a victory for dialogue, restraint and diplomacy,” the prime minister said, congratulating the people of Pakistan and the international community on the development.

He further noted that both American and Iranian leadership demonstrated patience and political maturity throughout negotiations, which ultimately paved the way for the breakthrough agreement.

The premier described the development as a “new dawn for peace”, expressing hope that the accord would contribute to long-term regional stability and improved international relations.
