ISLAMABAD: Saudi Arabia and China on Monday welcomed the peace agreement reached between the United States and Iran to halt military operations and launch negotiations aimed at securing a permanent settlement, while commending Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts in facilitating the breakthrough.

In a statement, Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Ministry said the kingdom welcomed the understanding between Washington and Tehran, which envisages an end to hostilities and the start of detailed talks within the next 60 days aimed at achieving a lasting agreement.

Riyadh praised the mediation efforts undertaken by Pakistan and Qatar and acknowledged the constructive response shown by both the United States and Iran, which helped pave the way for the accord.

The kingdom stressed the need to restore security and freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz to conditions prevailing before February 28 and expressed hope that the initiative would contribute to strengthening regional and international security.

Saudi Arabia further underlined that any permanent settlement should take into account the security concerns and interests of countries across the region.

China welcomes US-Iran peace deal

Meanwhile, China also welcomed the US-Iran peace agreement and expressed appreciation for Pakistan’s role in helping bring the two sides together.

Speaking at a regular press briefing in Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said China hoped the two countries would formally sign the first phase of the memorandum of understanding (MoU) as scheduled and remain committed to resolving differences through dialogue and negotiations.

Lin added that Beijing was prepared to work with the international community to help restore peace and stability in the Middle East and the Gulf region at the earliest opportunity.

US President Donald Trump said on Monday that a deal between the United States and Iran was “now complete,” announcing the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz to global shipping and the lifting of the US naval blockade on Iranian ports.

According to Iranian authorities, the MoU was finalised after months of intensive negotiations and has brought an immediate and permanent end to military operations across all fronts, including Lebanon.

Earlier on Monday, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced that Washington and Tehran had agreed to cease hostilities and begin a diplomatic process aimed at reaching a comprehensive and durable peace agreement.

He said the first phase of the understanding would be formally signed in Geneva on June 19, with negotiations on a final accord to follow after both sides implement their initial commitments.

Later in the day, the prime minister announced that Pakistan would host the signing ceremony of the landmark US-Iran peace agreement in Geneva on June 19.

Pakistan has consistently supported diplomatic efforts during the period of tensions between the United States and Iran and remains committed to peaceful solutions to international disputes.
