TOKYO: Japan has welcomed the agreement reached between the United States and Iran aimed at ending recent hostilities, with Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi expressing hope that the accord will be implemented steadily and contribute to the reopening of the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.

In a message posted on X on Monday, Takaichi said Tokyo viewed the agreement positively and stressed the importance of restoring free and secure maritime traffic through the waterway, a key route for global energy supplies and international trade.

The Japanese premier said her government strongly hoped that safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz would be guaranteed in practice and that efforts to resolve Iran’s nuclear issue and other outstanding matters would reach a final settlement as soon as possible.

Japan has closely monitored developments in the Middle East, where tensions have raised concerns over regional stability and the security of vital shipping lanes. Tokyo has consistently emphasised the importance of diplomacy and de-escalation, given its heavy reliance on energy imports that pass through the Strait of Hormuz.
