NEW YORK: Five people were wounded in a stabbing incident at New York City’s Penn Station on Sunday, according to city officials, with emergency services confirming that all victims were taken to the hospital and the suspected attacker was arrested at the scene.
The New York Fire Department said the victims were civilians and that one person sustained serious injuries. The department added that the suspect was “in custody” and no further threat to the public was believed to exist.
Authorities have not yet disclosed a motive for the attack, and the circumstances leading up to the stabbings remain under investigation.
The incident occurred at one of the busiest transportation hubs in the United States, serving hundreds of thousands of commuters and travellers daily.
The attack came shortly before the New York metropolitan area was due to host two major sporting events, including matches connected to the ongoing FIFA World Cup, prompting heightened security concerns.
Law enforcement officials were seen maintaining a large presence around the station as investigators examined the scene and interviewed witnesses.
No information about the identities of the victims or the suspect was immediately released.
Renewed Focus on Public Safety
The Penn Station attack is the latest in a series of stabbing incidents reported across the United States in recent days, renewing concerns about violent crime in public spaces.
On 3 June, veteran actor James Handy, known for his appearances in Top Gun: Maverick and Jumanji, was fatally stabbed outside a home in the Tarzana neighborhood of Los Angeles. Authorities arrested 44-year-old Michael Gledhill, the son of Handy’s girlfriend, on suspicion of murder.
In Chicago on 5 June, two men were injured during an altercation in the Loop district after a woman allegedly stabbed them following what police described as an “unwanted contact” incident.
A day later in Washington, D.C., a teenage boy was hospitalised after being stabbed during an overnight dispute in the downtown area.
On 7 June, police in Buffalo, New York, arrested a 33-year-old woman on felony assault charges after a victim sought treatment for severe knife wounds suffered during an altercation on Allen Street.
Ongoing High-Profile Cases
Several major knife-related criminal cases are also moving through the US legal system.
In Texas, prosecutors recently concluded their case against Karmelo Anthony, who is accused of fatally stabbing 17-year-old Austin Metcalf during a dispute at a high school track meet in April 2025. The defence argues Anthony acted in self-defence.
Meanwhile, a Washington state man was sentenced to more than four years in federal prison on 3 June after being convicted of a hate crime linked to the stabbing of a Black female passenger aboard a public bus in 2024.
Knife Crime Statistics
According to FBI supplementary homicide data, the United States records approximately 1,600 to 1,800 knife-related homicides each year, making edged weapons one of the most common methods used in violent killings nationwide.
Authorities in New York said the investigation into the Penn Station stabbing remains ongoing and urged anyone with information or video footage of the incident to contact law enforcement.
