On Thursday, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said that Islamabad is continuing its sincere role as mediator between the US and Iran. “Pakistan is proudly, but humbly, playing a sincere role as mediator between the United States and Iran,” PM Sharif stated.
“As I speak, these efforts continue with the support of Iran and the United States, and let us pray to Allah Almighty that we achieve long-lasting peace as early as possible,” PM Sharif said.
In May, Pakistan’s Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir visited Tehran. During his visit, Field Marshal Munir held high-level meetings with Iranian leaders as part of Pakistan’s mediation efforts to end the US-Iran conflict.
Field Marshal Munir held high-level meetings with Iranian President Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian, Speaker of the Iranian Parliament Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, and Iranian Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni.
Field Marshal Munir had also travelled to Tehran in April for high-level discussions with Iranian leaders.
On April 8, Pakistan brokered a ceasefire between the US and Iran and intensified mediation efforts to permanently the conflict through negotiations.
On April 11 and 12, Pakistan hosted high-stakes direct talks between the US and Iranian negotiators in Islamabad.
The Islamabad Talks between the US and Iran concluded without reaching a final agreement; however, they paved the way for diplomacy to permanently end the conflict.
Trump claims US-Iran deal is close
On Wednesday, US President Donald Trump expressed optimism that a deal could be reached soon, telling reporters at the White House, “it could happen…over the weekend.”
“I hear the negotiation itself is going very well, actually,” Trump said of the latest bid to end the US-Israeli war in the Middle East, which began on February 28.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said lines of communication with the United States were open.
“Communications with the Americans have not been cut off, and messages have been exchanged regarding the need to stop aggression against Beirut, but no tangible progress has been made in the negotiation process,” the Tasnim news agency quoted Araghchi as telling Lebanon’s Al Mayadeen TV.
