ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has decided to use the Result Management System (RMS) instead of the Result Transmission System (RTS) for the upcoming by-elections for Punjab and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (KP) provinces assemblies.

According to the local media, the electoral body has signed a contract worth billions of rupees with a private firm to modify the RMS that was previously used in the 2018 elections. The contracting company will prepare the system within two months. The ECP will first evaluate it through a pilot test before using it in the polls. The ECP has already started training its employees to better acquaint them with the newly modified RMS.

RMS is a desktop computer application that is installed at the offices of returning officers. According to the commission’s website, it is an electronic form-based software where different forms of data involving the polling process can be entered and stored.

RTS in 2018

It is to be noted that RTS, which is an android-based software developed by the National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra) for swift disbarment of voting results, had crashed during the general elections in 2018, pushing the entire process to a standstill.
