WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump claimed on Thursday that three American destroyers successfully passed through the Strait of Hormuz despite coming under attack from Iranian missiles, drones and fast boats, saying the vessels emerged unscathed while Iranian forces suffered heavy losses.

In a lengthy post on his Truth Social platform, Trump described the encounter as a major military success for the United States and praised the crews aboard the destroyers for what he called their “successful” operation under hostile conditions.

According to Trump, the destroyers were targeted while leaving the strategically vital waterway, one of the world’s most important shipping routes for global oil supplies.

“There was no damage done to the three Destroyers, but great damage done to the Iranian attackers,” Trump wrote, alleging that Iranian boats involved in the assault were destroyed during the confrontation.

He claimed several small Iranian vessels were sunk during the exchange, describing them as replacements for what he referred to as Iran’s “fully decapitated Navy”.

Trump further alleged that missiles launched towards the American ships were intercepted and destroyed before impact, while drones targeting the vessels were “incinerated” in mid-air.

The US president used highly combative language in describing the incident, saying the drones “dropped ever so beautifully down to the Ocean”, while also accusing Iran’s leadership of acting irrationally and dangerously.

“A normal Country would have allowed these Destroyers to pass, but Iran is not a normal Country,” Trump stated, adding that Iranian leaders were “led by lunatics”.

He also repeated longstanding US accusations regarding Tehran’s nuclear ambitions, claiming Iran would use a nuclear weapon if given the opportunity.

Trump warned that Washington was prepared to escalate military action if Iran failed to quickly agree to a deal with the United States.

“But they’ll never have that opportunity and, just like we knocked them out again today, we’ll knock them out a lot harder, and a lot more violently, in the future, if they don’t get their Deal signed, FAST!” he wrote.

The president added that the destroyers would now return to what he described as a US “Naval Blockade”, calling it a “Wall of Steel”.

The remarks come amid heightened tensions in the Gulf region and growing concerns over maritime security around the Strait of Hormuz, through which a significant portion of the world’s crude oil shipments pass daily.

Neither the Pentagon nor Iranian authorities immediately issued official statements confirming the details of the reported confrontation.
