KEY POINTS

  • Six exam chances now allowed instead of four within four years.
  • Policy applies to Matriculation, Intermediate, O and A Level students.
  • 43,000 fewer children enrolled in Punjab government schools than the target.
  • CEO Lahore seeks explanation, orders immediate enrollment campaign.

LAHORE: In a significant move to enhance exam flexibility, the educational boards in Pakistan’s Punjab have increased the maximum number of examination attempts for students from four to six within a four-year period.

The new policy, effective from the coming annual examinations, applies to Matric, Intermediate, as well as O and A Level students.

Candidates will be required to appear under the current syllabus for all attempts, including those retaking or improving subjects after passing.

The Punjab Boards Committee of Chairmen (PBCC) stated that the decision aims to provide greater academic flexibility and support students who need additional opportunities to clear their exams successfully. The ruling will apply uniformly across all boards and groups.

Impact on Students

The increase in exam attempts significantly reduces academic pressure. Students can now prepare better and attempt exams with more confidence. This flexibility allows them to plan studies more effectively, focusing on understanding concepts rather than rushing to pass within a limited number of chances.

Benefits

The decision brings several long-term benefits, including reduced dropout rates by giving students more chances to succeed. It promotes a positive learning environment where students are encouraged to keep trying instead of giving up after failure, supporting overall academic growth.

Enrollment crisis

On the other hand, a troubling enrollment shortfall has emerged in Punjab’s government schools. It has been revealed that 43,000 fewer boys and girls have been enrolled than the target set for the purpose. Over the past 16 days alone, more than 18,000 students were not enrolled. On average, 12,000 children remain out of school daily.

The overall target was to enroll 693,000 children, but current enrollment stands at only 566,000. The situation has enraged the Education Authority in Lahore. CEO Education Lahore Tariq Mehmood has demanded an explanation from concerned officials and ordered an immediate, monitored enrollment campaign. He made it clear that failure to meet the targets will result in strict accountability for the officials responsible.
