ISLAMABAD: Higher Education Commission (HEC) Pakistan has granted 98 undergraduate scholarships to students originating from the coastal districts of Balochistan, with further selections currently in process.

The initiative, formally known as the Coastal Region Higher Education Scholarships for Undergraduate Programmes, was launched during the 2022–23 fiscal year under the Government of Pakistan’s Southern Balochistan Development Package.

Its primary aim is to broaden access to quality higher education for students holding domicile or local certificates from Gwadar, Lasbela, Kech (Turbet), and Awaran districts.

200 students to be sponsored

The scholarship programme is designed to support 200 students in pursuing Bachelor of Science (BS) degrees at HEC-recognized universities across Pakistan. To date, 98 scholarships have been awarded across three successive batches.

The fourth batch has drawn overwhelming interest, with over 800 applicants responding to HEC’s latest call. Officials note that this surge in applications reflects strong enthusiasm among the region’s youth for higher education opportunities.

Focus on underprivileged and female students

The scholarship covers all academic disciplines and has significantly improved educational access for students from Balochistan’s coastal belt. Special emphasis has been placed on supporting underprivileged groups and female students, who have historically faced barriers to higher education.

CPEC and regional development

According to HEC, the initiative is expected to complement emerging economic opportunities linked to the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). By fostering educational inclusion, youth empowerment, and sustainable development, the scholarship programme aims to create a skilled workforce capable of contributing to the region’s long-term growth.

The commission has confirmed that the selection process for additional recipients from the coastal region remains underway.
