RIYADH: Pakistan’s Chief of Defence Forces, Field Marshal Asim Munir, and Saudi Defence Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman discussed Iran’s attacks on Saudi Arabia and measures to address them amid rising tensions in the Middle East.

The discussion focused on steps to counter the attacks within the framework of the defence cooperation between the two countries.

“We discussed Iranian attacks on the Kingdom and the measures needed to halt them within the framework of our Joint Strategic Defense Agreement,” Prince Khalid wrote on social media early on Saturday.

He added: “We stressed that such actions undermine regional security and stability and expressed hope that the Iranian side will exercise wisdom and avoid miscalculation.”

The talks come as the United States and Israel launched a major military campaign against Iran on February 28, after which Tehran carried out attacks at several locations across the Gulf.

Raising concerns

Iran has also targeted US and Israeli military assets as the conflict has intensified, affecting the Arabian Gulf region and raising concerns about the global economy as energy shipments through the Strait of Hormuz face disruption.

According to the Saudi Defence Ministry, several drones targeting the Shayba oil field in the Empty Quarter were intercepted on Saturday.

Earlier in the week, a drone struck the US embassy in Riyadh, causing a minor fire, although no casualties were reported.

Saudi Arabia and Pakistan signed a Strategic Mutual Defense Agreement in September, under which aggression against either country would be treated as an attack on both.

Separately, Saudi Interior Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Saud bin Naif received a call from Pakistan’s Interior Minister Raza Naqvi, who condemned the attacks targeting the Kingdom and reaffirmed Pakistan’s solidarity with Saudi Arabia in addressing threats to its security and stability, according to the Saudi Press Agency.
