ISLAMABAD: Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi has urged major changes to Pakistan’s playing XI after their heavy defeat to India in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 match at the R. Premadasa Stadium on Sunday.

In an interview with a local news channel, Afridi strongly criticised the continued reliance on senior players and suggested that key names such as Babar Azam, Shaheen Afridi and Shadab Khan should be left out of the side for the upcoming group fixture against Namibia.

“If it were my decision, I would bench Babar, Shaheen and Shadab. I would bring in the new boys and give youngsters a proper chance,” Afridi said. He added that Pakistan must show confidence in emerging players instead of persisting with experienced stars who have not consistently delivered in high-pressure matches.

Afridi questioned why younger players remain on the sidelines when senior cricketers fail to perform in crucial encounters, particularly against major opponents.

Spin-heavy bowling strategy

Pakistan, the 2009 champions, opted for a spin-heavy bowling strategy after winning the toss and choosing to field, hoping to take advantage of the conditions. However, the plan backfired as India’s batters, led by an aggressive half-century from Ishan Kishan, powered their side to a strong total of 175/5.

Pakistan’s spinners struggled throughout. Abrar Ahmed conceded 38 runs in three overs, while Shadab Khan was hit for 17 runs in one over, with neither taking a wicket. Captain Salman Ali Agha later described it as an off-day for the pair.

Shaheen Afridi was the only pacer to make an impact, finishing with figures of 1/31.

Pakistan’s chase then collapsed, as they were bowled out for 114 in 18 overs. Agha admitted that early wickets left the team under pressure for the rest of the innings.

Pakistan will now play Namibia in their final group match on Wednesday in Colombo.
