ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Wednesday launched the 9th International Pakistan Army Team Spirit (PATS) Competition 2026, hosting 24 contingents from 19 friendly countries in a high-intensity multinational military exercise.

The opening ceremony was held at the National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC) in Pabbi, state broadcaster PTV News reported.

Senior military officials attended the opening ceremony, underscoring Pakistan’s commitment to fostering professional military collaboration and operational preparedness.

Multinational participation

A total of 24 international teams from 19 countries are competing, alongside military observers.

Participating nations include Bahrain, Bangladesh, Belarus, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, Maldives, Morocco, Nepal, Qatar, Sri Lanka, Turkiye, the United States, and Uzbekistan.

Indonesia, Myanmar, and Thailand are attending as observers, PTV News reported.

Furthermore, 16 domestic teams from the Pakistan Army and Pakistan Navy, with observers from the Pakistan Air Force, are taking part in the competition.

Focus on operational readiness

PATS is an annual mission-specific and task-oriented military exercise designed to test the physical fitness, mental resilience, and tactical expertise of participating forces.

The 60-hour-long exercise simulates near-real operational conditions, including challenging sub-tactical missions and semi-mountainous patrolling operations.

It aims to enhance combat skills, teamwork, rapid decision-making, and interoperability among allied forces.

“The exercise promotes perseverance through team spirit,” PTV News reported.

“It hones basic soldierly attributes while facilitating the exchange of innovative tactics and best practices.”

History and significance

The 8th edition of PATS, held last year at Kharian Garrison, drew participation from 15 local and international military teams.

Over time, the competition has become a prestigious platform for professional military development and bilateral engagement.

The exercise not only strengthens operational capabilities but also deepens ties among friendly armed forces, supporting regional stability and security cooperation.
