- Briefings described as contingency planning
- Protests continue across Iran nationwide
- No decision taken on military action
WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has been briefed on possible military options targeting Iran, as nationwide protests continue to grip the country.
The New York Times reported that senior US defence and security officials recently presented Trump with a range of potential military scenarios involving Iran. The briefing reportedly focused on contingency planning rather than an imminent decision to use force, the report said, citing current and former US officials.
The discussions come at a time when Iran has been experiencing widespread protests, initially driven by economic grievances and later expanding into broader demonstrations.
Iranian authorities have imposed internet restrictions and increased security measures, while also organising pro-government rallies in several cities.
Routine strategic planning
According to The New York Times, the military options discussed were part of routine strategic planning and were not necessarily linked directly to the ongoing unrest. US officials quoted in the report said no final decision had been taken, and diplomatic channels with Tehran remain open.
The report added that some officials expressed caution, warning that any military action against Iran could have serious regional consequences. Others stressed the importance of maintaining readiness amid heightened tensions in the Middle East.
Iranian officials have not publicly commented on the report. Tehran has previously rejected external pressure, saying its internal affairs are a domestic matter and reiterating its commitment to regional stability.
The White House has also not issued a formal statement responding to the report.
