ISLAMABAD: Two Pakistani police personnel were killed while four others were injured on Thursday when an improvised explosive device targeted an armoured vehicle in Dera Ismail Khan district of the country’s northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, local officials said.
Local police said an unidentified attacker detonated a roadside bomb as an APC (armoured personnel carrier) from the Takwara police post passed by. Constable Saifur Rehman and the vehicle’s driver, Ramzan, were martyred in the blast.
The injured — Mehmood Alam, Asif Rehman, Kifayat, and Shahid, an FC havaldar — were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Security forces later cordoned off the area and launched a search operation. The explosion occurred near Takwara village in the Hathala area, about 35 kilometres from Dera Ismail Khan and roughly 10 kilometres from Kulachi tehsil, on the route toward South Waziristan.
The attack used a locally made, high-intensity IED weighing between 8 and 10 kilograms.
Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has condemned the blast and paid rich tribute to the martyred police personnel.
He extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the martyred officers and prayed for the swift recovery of the four policemen injured in the blast.
The interior minister said the nation salutes the courage of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police, who continue to stand on the frontlines in the fight against terrorism. He added that the sacrifices of the fallen officers will not be forgotten.
